Bonds - Seeking Fixed Income

When the economic outlook is favourable, corporate profits healthy, and the equity market is trending higher, bonds are seldom regarded as the asset class of choice when constructing an investment portfolio.

In such an environment, equities often hold greater appeal, with bonds attractive mainly to those investors whose primary objective is the generation of income, or those with shorter time horizons and a lower tolerance of volatility.

There are times, however, when the relative merits of bonds as an asset class deserve greater attention. We believe that the current volatile environment is one of those times.

Depending on the maturity date, many bonds are eligible to be held in an ISA or a SIPP providing you with an alternative to cash deposits in a low interest rate environment. The value of your investment, and the income from it, may be at risk if the issuer defaults.
